YouTube Business
Do you
watch YouTube? Do you know you can earn from it? Not by just watching and
commenting on other videos but by uploading your own video on it. Now you will
be thinking how I will upload, where to upload and what to upload. Don’t worry
for that, the script will be starting from scratch to top. In this script you
will be taught how to earn money by uploading videos on YouTube and make it as
your business.
1. YouTube- Introduction
YouTube
is a global video-sharing website, having its headquarters in San Bruno,
California, United States. It was created by three former PayPal employees,
namely, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, in February 2005. But in
November 2006, Google bought it for US$ 1.65 Billion. Basically YouTube is now
one of Google’s subsidiaries. Susan Wojcicki is the current CEO of YouTube. The
site allows users to upload, view, rate, share and comment on videos. But not
everyone can upload videos or comment on videos. One needs to be registered
with Google for those facilities. Though
unregistered users can watch videos on YouTube. Also videos deemed potentially
offensive are available only to registered users affirming themselves to be at
least 18 years old.
This was
a brief introduction to YouTube. Next you will be told about type of content to
use in your video.
2. Things You Can Upload on YouTube
Previously
we discussed about YouTube, now we will talk about the type of content to use
in your videos.
Now if
you ask randomly to any random person, ‘What can you upload on YouTube’, then
the most obvious answer you should expect is ‘videos’. Yes, obviously a video
and that is what YouTube is all about (Videos). But here we are going to talk
about the content of your video. Now go to YouTube’s homepage, you will see
many videos of different kind. Like there would be Prank Videos (Quite in
demand), Vlogging Videos (Video Blog), Street Interviews, videos where the
owner sit in front of camera and talk to its viewers on different topics and
many more kinds. Now it’s up to you, you are the one who has to decide that
what my videos should be about.
Though
it is advised to use such content which comes under YouTube’s guidelines. Use
such content which pleases people emotionally to subscribe to your channel. All
depends upon how creative you are.
Therefore
in this heading, we learned what type of content we can upload in our videos,
so that we can grow our channel, next we will discuss about essential tools for
uploading a video on YouTube.
3. Essential Tools
As we
discussed previously about the content of our videos, we now discuss about the
tools to generate the video and to upload it successfully.
Well as
told before, that your channel can be your business, and generally business
requires huge investments. No, don’t you break your heart because this is
something different. You don’t really need huge investments in this field. Here
are the tools you must have before starting:
1) Camera:
Now camera doesn’t really mean a DSLR, though if you have it, good, if not,
then you got options. You can use the web-cam, you may use the phone’s camera.
If you think it wouldn’t be successful then go to the YouTube and search for
‘BB Ki Vines’. He is a YouTuber (People who make videos on YouTube are called
YouTubers) who has almost seven lakh subscribers and more than 100 million
views and guess what, he still uses a phone camera for his videos. So any camera
can be used, it’s just the content that matters most.
2) A
Voice Recorder: Well if you choose to sit in front of your camera and talk to
your viewers on different topics, then you really don’t need a voice recorder.
But if your channel is about pranks and street interviews then you ought to
have it. Well, no need to go to a shop and buy a voice recorder. You can simply
use your phone’s voice recorder or use may also use cheap Lavalier microphones
which are made from earphones.
3) Video
Editing Software: Video editing software is one of the most essential parts of
this business. Therefore you need to have good software for that. It is advised
to start from the basic first. Therefore go with Windows Movie Maker. Learn
that and then change it for professional software, like, Final Cut Pro and Sony
Vegas. Though there are some free video editing software too, for example, AVS
Video Editor, Lightworks, Virtualdub, Blender and many more.
4) A
Google Account: Another important thing is you must be registered with Google.
As earlier discussed only registered users can upload videos on YouTube. So if
you have an account then its good, but if not then Sign Up to Google. Hardly
takes 5-10 minutes.
Therefore
we discussed about essential tools one requires to upload a good and an
effective video. Next we will discuss how to start the channel.
4. How to Start
Previously
we discussed about the essential tools, now let’s learn how to start the
channel.
To
create a channel on YouTube is a very easy job. You just need to be registered
with Google as discussed earlier. When you get registered, go to YouTube’s
homepage. On the extreme top left, there will be an option ‘My Channel’. Click
on that option and you will get a similar outlay like this picture.
‘Congratulations’,
you have successfully created a YouTube channel. You may add a description;
give the channel yours or any other name.
Now to
upload a video, click on ‘Upload a Video’, select the video from your drive,
give it a name, descriptions, credits, if any, and then upload it. If you copy
music or clips of other artists then you must add credits in the description of
your video, otherwise if that particular artist reports your video then YouTube will delete that
video of yours. You can also pick music from YouTube library, you are not
required to fill credits for that.
So we
discussed how to start the channel, now next we will talk about its promotion.
5. Grow Your Audience/Promotion
As
previously discussed, we are now clear with how to start a channel on YouTube,
but if you don’t have audience, then the channel is of no use. Therefore one
needs to promote their channel to gain viewership. Now I’m not asking you to go
and pay Google to advertise about your channel, though you can do this, but let’s
keep it simple. You can promote your channel by advertising it yourself on your
social media accounts like facebook, Instagram, Google+. You may create a
separate page on Facebook for your channel, and promote/advertise your videos
through it.
It is a
slow process, don’t expect the best to come soon, but if you are consistent,
then you will achieve in it. Remember don’t start your channel solely for
earning, though keep that earning part as a motive too but first learn properly
and then you remove the ‘L’ from it.
So now
we are clear how important promotion of our channel is and how it can be done.
Next we will talk about connecting your channel to Google Ad Sense.
6. Connect your Channel to Google
Ad Sense
Previously
we discussed about growing our audience by different ways of promotion, now we
will talk about connecting your channel to Google Ad Sense.
Now what
is Google Ad Sense?
Google
Ad Sense is a program run by Google that allows publishers, which you are, in
the Google Network of content sites to serve automatic text, image, video or
interactive media advertisements that are targeted to site content and
audience. It was released on June 18, 2003.
Now the
question arises how to connect our channel to Ad Sense.
You can
connect your channel only after one month of its registration; you must be 18
years or more and you must have 500+ subscribers on your channel. After you
fulfil these criterions, Google will provide you a URL code or your website. To
connect to Ad Sense follow the following procedure:
1) Go to
adsense.google.com
2) Sign
up for Google Ad Sense (Provide true information).
3) Provide
true bank details as they will make payments to you through bank accounts only.
After
signing up for Ad Sense, next comes monetising your videos. For that go to your
channel on YouTube and follow the following steps:
1) Click
on the ‘Video Manager’.
2) Click
on the ‘Channel’ on extreme left.
Ad Sense
must verify your channel first. If it is verified then there will be a green
tick in front of ‘Verification’, if not verified yet then you have to wait
until they verify it. When you get verified follow further steps:
3) Click
on ‘Monetisation Setting’.
4)
Monetise your account.
5) Go
back to your Video Manger
If you
have a green Dollar sign on your video, then it signifies your videos have been
monetised. This basically means advertisements will be shown on your video and
you can earn by the number of views you get on a video.
Now we
are clear on how to earn with Google Ad Sense, next you will be told about some
basic rules and tips for YouTube.
